The Materials Behind Fungivio

Straw

Straw is one of the primary substrates we use at Fungivio due to its accessibility and effectiveness for cultivating a variety of mushroom species. Sourced from local farms, this agricultural byproduct is rich in carbon and provides the perfect structure for mycelium to flourish.

By utilizing straw, we contribute to a sustainable cycle, turning waste into food. The preparation process involves shredding and pasteurizing the straw to eliminate competing microorganisms, creating an optimal environment for mushroom growth. As mushrooms thrive on this nutrient-rich substrate, we see impressive yields and robust fruiting bodies.

Hardwood Sawdust

Hardwood sawdust is another key material in our cultivation processes. Sourced from responsibly managed timber operations, this material is an excellent source of lignin and cellulose, both vital for mushroom nutrition.

This substrate is particularly favored for species such as shiitake and oyster mushrooms, which require a nutrient-dense environment to grow. By choosing sawdust from sustainable sources, we ensure that our practices support the environment without contributing to deforestation. The sawdust undergoes sterilization to remove any contaminants, allowing mushrooms to grow unimpeded.

Coco Coir

Coco coir is a versatile material we incorporate into our substrate mixes. Derived from the husks of coconuts, coco coir is renewable and eco-friendly, making it a preferred choice for many growers. Its ability to retain moisture while providing good drainage creates a balanced environment for mushroom mycelium.

Using coco coir not only enhances the substrate’s ability to hold water but also supports aeration, which is crucial for healthy growth. As a lightweight and biodegradable option, coco coir helps us minimize our environmental footprint while promoting optimal fungus development.

Gypsum

Gypsum, a mineral composed of calcium sulfate, is an important additive we use to enhance our substrates. It comes from natural deposits and serves multiple purposes in mushroom cultivation. Gypsum helps to improve soil structure and pH balance, promoting healthy mycelium colonization.

Adding gypsum to our substrates aids in preventing clumping, ensuring even distribution of moisture and nutrients. This ultimately contributes to more robust yields and better-quality mushrooms. Our choice of gypsum reflects our commitment to using materials that support the health of the mushrooms and the overall ecosystem.
